With the current slump in real estate, competition has become really a survival of the fittest. Though real estate is like a wheel turning with its ups and down, the market has been down for quite a long time. It is how a realtor deals with the everyday challenges that will determine his success as a licensed real estate salesperson.
Many people think that becoming a realtor means easy money or fast cash.
As the market changes where homes stay longer to sell and interest rates rise, many agents would think of leaving the industry. Good realtors that know the trade and the tricks that go with it will survive in this industry and experience its benefits in the long run.
To survive, a realtor might want to consider doing the following:
1. Get exposed -- use print media like advertising in local newspapers and yellow pages. Write articles for a real estate magazine. Send out mailers to include, if possible, articles you have written for a real estate magazine.
2. Call past clients – get referrals from past clients. See if they are planning to move or know someone looking to buy or sell.
3. Provide incentives to potential customers -- offer to pay for a home inspection out of your own pocket, or take a smaller commission on a sale.
4. Create a new website or make additions to your current site -- add podcasts, maps, MLS listings, etc.
5. Network in neighborhoods within your community -- introduce yourself and hand out business cards to homeowners.
6. Join community events or fairs – Set up a booth and offer free advice to potential buyers and sellers.
7. Attend first-time homebuyer seminars – make sure you have made a good and lasting first impression to new homebuyers. Make your face and name known and remembered.
8. Complete your continuing education units (CEUs) for the year -- keep yourself busy and stay up to date with recent laws and changes.
9. If not yet licensed, get a career boost by getting your broker's license.
