Come December, the first major snowfall of the year hits. That is if you live in North America. The snow on the roof may signal something. Like, if it is melting from your roof rapidly… it means that heat escapes from your home through the roof and may consider adding or installing insulation in your attic.
Another sign of heat loss through the roof is when there is a rapid formation of icicles without a thaw.
When there is heat loss through your roof, check that the insulation on your attic has no gaps, is evenly distributed, is dry and that the vapor barrier side is facing downward or towards the space you are trying to keep warm.
Clear the snow from the walkways using a snow shovel. Sprinkle sand or salt on the walkways as needed to build traction.
Check your roof and see to it that there are no ice dams along the eaves and casue a puddle on the roof that may leak through the floor.
If you have forced-air heating ducts, check ducts once a year for leaks and seal with duct tape.
Take time to list down what you need for the roof, windows, floors and walkways to make your home cozy in a cold winter’s day.
